Nursing continues to be a field that is highly in demand, and working as a nurse is a noble path, since caring and professional nurses make the difference in a patient's hospital experience. From working as a nurse, one knows that the job of nursing itself is fulfilling, but having an additional educational credential is usually helpful. Nurses who have a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree often have more opportunities for advancement, earn higher salaries, and better serve patients. Current Registered Nurses (RNs) may want to consider a RN to BSN program.

Within the field of nursing, there are a plethora of career choices, and having a BSN degree puts one in a better position for many of them. A supervisory nursing position usually requires a BSN, as does the job of case manager. Many opportunities require a Master of Science in Nursing degree. A nurse midwife, for example, needs to have a BSN and either a graduate degree or graduate level certificate. To work as a nurse practitioner, one must have a graduate degree. While one may currently be content in their current position, a BSN career path is valuable. Working towards a degree now will ensure that one has the necessary preparation to move into graduate studies later.

Higher salaries are another benefit for those with a degree. College graduates consistently earn more than those without a degree, and the field of nursing is no exception. While the salary difference between RNs with and without a BSN is actually quite small at first, over time, it makes a difference, especially in the opportunities to seek the higher paying managerial positions.

Better patient care is another factor is the decision to obtain a BSN, and a BSN career. While the hands-on practical experience of actually working as a nurse is immeasurable, there is a benefit to having more theoretical knowledge. Nurses who have the experience, ability, and personality to provide exemplary care to patients, along with a strong educational background are in the best position to help those they serve.

Once one had decided to pursue a BSN degree, the question becomes how to do it. Currently working nurses have busy schedules, and finding time to attend classes and study can be difficult. In addition, many nurses have families, and additional time away from them is a consideration. One option is an online RN to BSN program. Taking classes online is a flexible way to manage a work, family, and school schedule, and allows one to complete the degree without leaving their current position, or disrupting their family life. There are many excellent programs from which to choose, and which will provide a quality education with flexibility.
