Resume template is a standard format or a skeletal structure of a resume. Often people need help while writing their resumes. The first hindrance is to decide how to start writing the resume. This is where resume templates come into play – they provide the starting point. There are numerous websites that provide help on resume templates for customers.
Apart from providing a starting point, resume templates also save a lot of time and energy that goes into writing a resume. The other side of the coin is that customer service resume templates can limit the creativity that a person can put into building a unique resume. The golden mean is to refer to an available resume template only as a starting point. Later additions and deductions have to be as per your requirements. There are no hard and fast rules on how to build a resume template and the entire resume. What can be advised are a few general guidelines based on some commonly known facts.
The first step is to decide the kind of resume you are going to build. Broadly speaking, resume formats are of two types – chronological and functional. The former lists the achievements in your resume in a chronological or reverse chronological manner while the latter does so in the order of their importance. Functional resume is specific, brief and conveys the impression that you know what is most important. However it can leave a few chronological gaps. Chronological resumes are complete but will strain the recruiter’s mind in order to find out your important achievements. On the whole, a functional resume with no chronological gaps is better. If you still want to build a chronological resume, underline or bolden your important achievements.
Next, make it a point not to stretch the resume beyond two pages. This is the standard length and a recruiter will not spend more than 20 seconds on reading your resume. A longer resume is likely to scare away a recruiter. This is also why functional resumes are better than chronological ones.
Resumes always start with your name and contact details. Ensure that the contact details are correctly mentioned. This is followed by the title and career objective. The title should mention your profession and its sub type with your experience and most important skill – all in just one sentence. Chances are, if the title is attractive the recruiter will be impressed and might even read your resume in detail. The career objective should state the position you seek in the organization and where you intend to rise in the near future. This allows the recruiter to place your recruitment in a better perspective by gearing your ambition with the objectives of the organization.
A recruiter mainly looks at the skills you have developed based on your experience and education. Therefore mentioning skills on a priority basis is the standard practice. Experience and educational follow, in that order. Your resume becomes chronological or functional on the manner you fill in the details under these three heads.
